The Marksburg in the federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate in Germany #323534234
Description
The Marksburg is a castle that sits on the hill overlooking the town of Braubach in the federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate in Germany. It is one of the main enclaves of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2002.The use of the fortress was mainly defensive and not so much as a residence for royal families. The construction stands out above all for the great keep (bergfried), which is crowned with a butter tower, an upper tower with a smaller diameter than the main one. Of the 40 castles between Bingen am Rhein and Koblenz, Marksburg was, along with Maus Castle, the only two that were never destroyed and the only one that has been maintained throughout its existence.
