Description
David Levy meets with members of the government at Beit Hanassi, the President's residence in Jerusalem then under the leadership of incoming prime minister Yitzhak Shamir on October 20, 1986. Others in the rear of the coalition government include Moshe Shahal (Labor Party) and Yitzhak Peretz (Shas Party). At the time, Levy was Deputy Prime Minister and Housing Minister. Born in Rabat Morocco in 1937, Levy became the most prominent Sephardi, or Mizrahi, or Oriental Jewish politician in Israel. Many felt and some still feel discriminated against by the then largely Ashkenazi Jewish social and political establishment. Levy died in his home town of Beit She'an, Israel, on June 2, 2024 at the age of 86.
