Description
San Francisco has always had luxury hotels, and there have been lots of hotels throughout the country named `Occidental`, but the San Francisco Occidental was The Hotel the wealthy travelers went to. In addition to the many famous writers who have stayed there, so did the Crittenden family and Laura Fair. Alexander Crittenden was an early, and very influential politician and attorney from a well establish family. Although married and with children at the time, he was also with Laura Fair, who at the time, thought he was single. In November 1870, the Crittenden family along with Fair were staying in the hotel. While on the ferry back from Oakland, Laura Fair shot Alexander, he died the next day. This site is now the Equitable Life Building, and one of the cities first post WW2 office buildings, from 1955. As seen 9 August 2022.
