World Humanitarian Day is an international day dedicated to recognizing humanitarian personnel and honoring those who have sacrificed their lives while working for humanitarian causes. It was designated by the United Nations General Assembly and is observed annually on August 19. This significant date marks the tragic event in 2003 when Sérgio Vieira de Mello, the then Special Representative of the Secretary-General to Iraq, and 21 of his colleagues lost their lives in the bombing of the UN Headquarters in Baghdad.
