Bergenhus was the king's residence and center of administration when Bergen was the capital of Norway. The fortress contains buildings dating from 1240, although there are post-World War II constructions, and most of the enclosed area dates from the 19th century.The fortress facilities cover the area between Koengen in the east, Bradbenken in the south, Festningskaien in the west and Bontelabo in the north.
