The word "Shravanabelagola" means "a monk standing on a hilltop." Since at least the 3rd century BCE, ascetics and hermits have gathered here to pray. The town of Shravanabelagola is located at the foot of two hills, Chandragiri and Vindyagiri, which are sacred to the Jains.
