Chernyakhovsk, Insterburg Castle #331327127
Description

The Insterburg Castle (German: Burg Insterburg) is located in the Kaliningrad region in the city of Chernyakhovsk (until 1946 — the city of Insterburg). It was founded in 1336 by order of the master of the Teutonic Order Dietrich von Altenburg on the Angerapp River, near the mouth of the Inster — on the site of the settlement of Unsetrapis, destroyed in 1256 during the military campaign of the order in Nadrovia. It belongs to the category of "water" castles (water flowed in a ring around the castle: in the east of Angrapa (German. Angerapp), in the south Chernuppe — a small stream that flowed with strong pressure from the upper mill pond, in the west and north the Chernuppe water was directed into the castle moat). It was built from oak logs by the forces of the conquered Prussians under the leadership of the Oberst Marshal of the order from Konigsberg. There is no exact information about the time of the transformation of a wooden castle into a stone one. In the form in which Insterburg Castle was originally built of stone, it has not been preserved, as it was destroyed and burned twice: in 1376 by Lithuanian Prince Skirgail[1] and in 1457 during the war of the Prussian cities. However, the foundation masonry, built of large field stones, survived fires and destruction.
