Opah also called moonfish, with high swimming speed and endurance, have long-range migrations similar to tuna. However, they don’t school, but are fairly solitary and feed on mostly squid and krill. Most importantly, Opah are the warmest of the fish and can keep themselves about 6-8° C warmer than their surroundings. Large pectoral fin muscles are a big source of internal heat, through their own movement and unique internal structures that generate heat even in the absence of muscle contractions. Thick fat layers around the Opah’s skull and organs also insulate against the deep ocean cold.
