Paul Cézanne (1839-1906) was one of the most important figures of post-impressionism (also a pioneer of modernism), but also the most complex painter of the 19th century. He continued to develop his specific, new painting style throughout his career. His works resemble rough sketches, which give the appearance of spaciousness with a few strokes of the brush. The work could be divided into two stages: up to 1873 and the later period, when a tendency towards the integrity of pictorial means could be seen in the paintings (this is especially obvious when comparing his two self-portraits from 1873-1875 and the other from 1879-1885). He had a special variety of styles, different stages of finishing the paintings - some works are full of violent emotions, in others you can see a carefully chosen and rational composition and an incredible range of colors. In others, it is as if the characters enter into interrelated spatial relationships.
