Thomas the Apostle, also known as Didymus, was one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus according to the New Testament.Thomas boarded a ship from Arabia and reached Maliyankara. St. Thomas arrived in Kerala in 52 A.D. through the sea route. According to the different historical sources and excavations reveals that there existed an ancient trade relation between India and eastern world. There were no rival traditions for the origin of Christianity in India. Their tradition holds that he built seven churches, was martyred during prayer by a spearing on the “Big Hill” near Madras, and was buried in Mylapore, on the east coast of India. Marco Polo has recorded that he visited the tomb of St. Thomas in Mylapore. It was the site of the saint's martyrdom and had become a centre of pilgrimage for Christians Ultimately, St. Thomas' remains were transported to Ortona, Italy, where they reside today.
