The Canso Causeway connects Cape Breton Island to the mainland of Nova Scotia. It consists of a swing bridge over Canso Canal, which means Cape Breton remains an island. The causeway itself was built using approximately 10 tons of rock quarried from the mountain pictured in the background. It was officially opened August 13, 1955.
