The alleys of the medieval village of Ostuni known as the White City. Lecce Puglia, Italy #333802135
Description
Known as âthe White Cityâ, Ostuni is a truly charming village that stands on three hills in the land of Salento. Situated right on the south-eastern slopes of the Murgia, Ostuni is famous for its historic center characterized by buildings and houses made of white lime. The custom of using lime for construction is very ancient and it seems that it arose not only because this was an easily available product. The city has managed to preserve its medieval conformation that sees the construction of numerous buildings leaning against each other and the presence of multi-storey houses that were built in this way both for defensive needs and to make full use of the space available within the walls. Narrow alleys, stairways and ramps that go up and down characterize the center of the ancient village where there is no shortage of monuments of Baroque architecture
