Gua Maria Kerep Ambarawa was established in 1953. There, stands a statue of the Virgin Mary, which is said to be one of the tallest in Southeast Asia, reaching a height of 42 meters. The name Kerep itself comes from the village where the grotto is located. Initially, this place was just a natural cave that was later transformed into a pilgrimage and prayer site by the Catholic community.
