The Abbey of Montecassino (Abbazia di Montecassino) is one of the most famous monasteries in Italy, located on a hilltop about 130 kilometers southeast of Rome. Founded in 529 AD by St. Benedict of Nursia, it is considered the birthplace of the Benedictine Order. The abbey has a rich and tumultuous history, having been destroyed and rebuilt multiple times throughout the centuries.Montecassino is also well-known for its role in World War II. The abbey was heavily bombed in 1944 during the Battle of Monte Cassino, a series of fierce battles between Allied forces and the German army.
