Historic Celtic Cross West facing detail Golden Gate Park 8 #337753514
Description

The Historic, if barely known Celtic Cross in Golden Gate Park, was built to commemorate the first reading from the Book of Common Prayer in The New World, by the Chaplin of the Francis Drake expedition, for his landing at what is now called Drakes Bay in Northern California. It is because of this reading in this location, that the sponsors at the time felt that California, not the American East Coast, should be the true New England. Instead, it was placed on a then prominent location in the new Golden Gate Park, to coincide with the Mid Winter Fair of 1894. The 57 foot (17m) tall cross is on a pedestal that itself is 18 foot (5.5m) square and 7 foot (2.1m) tall. Being on federal land, it is now totally surrounded by trees, with no signs, because of the constitutional separation of church and state. As found 25 September 2024.
