Historic Mission Dolores Basilica San Francisco 4 #339312990
Description
Church buildings, like any other buildings, are all subject to not only their local histories, but that of their countries. With the original adobe Mission Dolores San Francisco damaged, and the brick one destroyed in the Earthquake and fire of 1906, the local Archdiocese started building the new church in 1913, but then came Americas entry into World War I in 1917, and further construction was delayed, finally being finished in 1918. Then in 1926 the Archdiocese added the beautiful Churrigueresque ornamentation, which they were inspired from the 1915 Panama Pacific Exposition, in San Diego. This form of ornamentation is attributed to the Spanish painter and architect Jose de ornamentation, but actually goes back even further. As enjoyed 2 October 2024.
