The Sahara Desert is the largest desert in North Africa, occupying about 1 4 of the continent, washed by the Atlantic Ocean from the west, bounded by the Atlas Mountains and the Mediterranean Sea from the north, and by the Red Sea from the east. The southern border is defined by a zone of sedentary ancient sand dunes.
