Fleet week 2024 USS Somerset 8 #341343212
Description
Fleet Week is an annual celebration of Americas Coast Guard, Marines and Navy, held in several American port cities, where the citizens and service personnel are encouraged to interact freely, with airshows and tours of the ships, all free. The warship USS Somerset is one of the ships on this years docked ships. Although the Navy has had three previous ships named Somerset, the last one also being a warship, this is the only one named specifically for Somerset County Pennsylvania, where a deserted field became the crash site of United Flight 93, when the passengers, after learning of the terrorist attack on the World Trade Centers in New York City, and remaining crew were able to recommender the plane, preventing the onboard Al Qaeda terrorists from getting to their intended target, somewhere in Washington DC. The on board memorials include photos of the crew and passengers, and a hand sewn forty panel quilt, one for each of the victims. The ships number 93 was the number of the crashed plane, and the motto Lets Roll was one of the last words recorded of one of the passengers as they stormed the cockpit. Photographing and posting on social media is encouraged. As witnessed 13 October 2024.
