The hard fibers of the fiber banana are obtained from the leaves of the so-called pseudostem. The pseudostem of the banana consists of up to 25 leaf sheaths in which the fiber bundles run in a longitudinal direction. The strength and fineness of the fibers depend on the position of the leaf sheath. A distinction is made between bandala (coarse fibers from the outer leaf sheaths), lupis (somewhat finer fibers), tupoz (finest fibers from the inner leaf sheaths) and tow (fiber waste). The fibers are processed into ropes, hammocks and carpets as well as pulp products such as fine cardboard and high-quality paper.
