This species of fig is native to Indian subcontinent and Indochina. It belongs to family Moraceae, the fig or mulberry family and is also known as the bodhi tree, Pipal tree, peepul tree, peepal tree. This large tree has religious significance in three major religions that originated on the Indian subcontinent, Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism. Green leaves are heart-shaped with a distinctive extended drip tip. Fruits are small green figs ripening to purple.
