Description
The font is carved of a single block of Caen stone with scenes representing the Temptation, St John the Baptist preaching in the Wilderness, the Baptism of Christ, and the Crucifixion. The four Evangelists, St John the Baptist, SS Peter and Paul, and the Virgin Mary are sculpted on the pedestal. The font cover is lifted into the canopy by a counter-weight pulley system. The font formed part of the Medieval Court at the Great Exhibition of 1851 and was much admired by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. The windows behind show King Ethelbert and his Frankish queen Bertha which also featured in the Medieval Court.
