Swallows are a species that really likes to fly and spends most of their life flying. Their sickle-shaped wings are very suitable for flying at high speed. Swallows often perch on overhead wires and other suitable ledges. They also perch to sleep. In late summer and autumn large numbers of swifts gather to roost in the reed beds.
