The dog's coat hair is intertwined , giving it an appearance that resembles sand. The variety shouldn't be confused for black and tan, where the dog's hair is not intertwined. The face usually contains more tan shades (varieties of gold, chocolate or brown are all acceptable) and black hairs look smudged, giving the dog a painted look. The sable cocker's colors are not permanently established until 12 months of age.
