Ruins of the Carmo Convent, Lisbon, Portugal - a well with motifs in stonework #349383327
Description
The ruins of the old Carmo Convent are a must-visit place in Lisbon. It was founded in 1389 for the Order of Carmel in a mendicant Gothic style that also refers to the Monastery of Batalha. The imposing building, then the largest Catholic temple in the Portuguese capital, was largely destroyed by the 1755 earthquake and the fire that followed. In the 19th century, the decision was made not to completely restore the building, leaving it as a sign of the destructive fury of the great earthquake.
