Cartils Castle in Gulpen-Wittem, South Limburg, Netherlands, in winter conditions #349661414
Description
Cartils Castle is located south of Wijlre, where the Geul and the Gulp meet. It is idyllically located between farmlands and forests. The name Cartils means 'belonging to a court (curtis)' and seems to indicate an old age. Over the centuries, a small hamlet formed around the castle. The castle must have traditionally been a castle with an outer bailey. A design that is recognizable in a drawing from 1613. In 1883 the castle was thoroughly renovated. The still existing canal must have been filled in and the large conservatory at the front was added. The garden was also tackled and changed into a landscape style.
