Pomegranate (Punica granatum) is a large shrub or small tree with smooth, evergreen leaves and showy orange to red flowers. Member of the family Lythraceae, pomegranate has a red-purple colored fruits. Their husk has two parts: an outer, hard covering and an inner, spongy mesocarp. Membranes of the mesocarp are organized as chambers that contain seeds which are embedded without attachment to the mesocarp. In mature fruits, the juice obtained by compressing the seeds yields a sour flavor.
