Manfred Rommel, who served 20 years as Mayor of Stuttgart, Germany, is hosted by Jerusalem Mayor Teddy Kollek who served in that office for 28 years, at the Israeli capitals city hall on June 14, 1987. Rommel was honored by Kollek and the City Council with the Guardian of Jerusalem award, only the second German to be so honored (Axel Springer was the first). A longtime friend and supporter of a united Jerusalem, Rommel warmly praised the citys leadership and vision, voicing the wish that, Jerusalem as a city in which three religions have its roots, will be united forever as a people, for mankind, and what is necessary, for the future. The only child of the famed Desert Fox, German WW II General Erwin Rommel, he chatted amiably with his host in German. Kollek fled the Nazis from his native Austria. Manfred Rommel died in Stuttgart at age 84 on November 7, 2013.
