The Parthenon meaning "maiden", "virgin", "celibate") is a temple dedicated to the protector of Athens, Athena Parthenos, and one of the major, rare octostyle Doric temples, made of white Pentelic marble and covered with Parian marble tiles,23 that are preserved. It was built between 447 BC and 438 BC on the Acropolis of Athens. It is the best-known Greek temple in the world, as well as one of the undisputed symbols of Athens and Greece.
