The Merangin-Jambi Geopark was confirmed through the UNESCO Session on May 24, 2023 in Paris, France, with the status of UNESCO Global Geopark. One of the special features of the Merangin Geopark is the presence of ancient fossils that are hundreds of millions of years old. In this area, there are two rivers that store ancient fossils or collections, namely the Batang River and the Mengkarang River. The ancient fossils or collections in question include wood, roots, leaves, animals, and shellfish that are 300 million years old. The Merangin Geopark is home to a karst landscape (exokarst and endokarst) that has existed since the Mesozoic era and is home to several rare flora and fauna such as Kerinci pine, kempas, tembesu, jelutung, bulian, and giant padma (Rafflesia arnoldii). In addition to having around 320 species of fish, elephants, there are also Sumatran tigers which are now endangered. Part of this area is included in the Kerinci Seblat National Park. All of these geological uniquenesses are in one area that can be found in the Merangin Jambi Geopark area with an area of 4,832.31 km² consisting of 12 Districts in Merangin Regency, with a total of 131 Villages Sub-districts
