Corinne Allal Sings at a 1987 Jerusalem Gathering Supporting New Ethiopian Jewish Immigrants #354203985
Description
Israeli pop and folk singer and musician Corinne Allal performs Hatikva, the Israeli national anthem, at a gathering of Israeli government officials and dignitaries of the new Ethiopian Jewish community called olim, or immigrants. The venue is Binyenei Ha'ouma, a large hall in central Jerusalem. The date of the event was July 27, 1987. Among the government officials present are Ya'akov Tsur (far left) Absorption Minister, Yitzhak Shamir (2nd from left) Prime Minister, and former Soviet Refusenik and immigration influencer Natan Sharansky (2nd from right). In the 1970s a trickle of the immigrants began to come to Israel, fleeing the chaos of civil war. In the 1980s and 90s the Israel government launched massive evacuations. By 2005, the Ethiopian Jewish community in Israel exceeds 150,000, over 1.5 per cent of the nation's total population. Allal died from cancer on December 11, 2024. Shamir passed on June 30, 2012 at the age of 96.
