Historic A. Philip Randolph Shipwrights Cottage India Basin San Francisco 1 #354651969
Description
Carpenter and ship maker, or Shipwright, Jan Janse Dirks, came to San Francisco from his native Netherlands about 1850, and personally built the home for himself and family about 1875, in the Italianate and Carpenter Gothic style. Today, serving as a visitors center, it is named for civil rights activist A. Philip Randolph who, among many others things, met with President Harry Truman and convinced him that the military should be integrated. The inside has period pieces and the back offers tables and chairs to enjoy lunch while overlooking India Basin. As enjoyed 11 January 2025.
