Steller's Sea Cow (extinct 1768) #358395696
Description
Steller's sea cow was a large marine mammal once found in the North Pacific. Discovered in 1741 by German naturalist Georg Wilhelm Steller, it was a relative of the dugong and manatee. This gentle herbivore, which could grow up to 9 meters long and weigh several tons, thrived on kelp in cold waters. Unfortunately, due to excessive hunting by sailors and fur traders for its meat, fat, and hide, the species was driven to extinction just 27 years after its discovery in 1768.
