Alcalá de Guadaíra Castle: A Study in Moorish & Gothic Design, square towers, battlements sunset sky #368694729
Description
The Alcalá de GuadaÃra castle showcases a blend of architectural styles reflecting its long history. Originally built under Almohad (Moorish) rule starting in 1181, its early elements exhibit typical Islamic design features. Following the Christian reconquest, the castle underwent significant modifications and additions, incorporating Gothic stylistic elements. This resulted in a fascinating juxtaposition of Moorish and Gothic architecture, evident in its irregular layout, the variety of its eleven towers (some with irregular plans and others polygonal), and the presence of both the original Alcázar (palace) and later Christian additions. The castle thus stands as a testament to the different cultural and architectural influences that have shaped Alcalá de GuadaÃra over centuries.
