Veteran New York liberal Democratic Congresswoman Nita Lowey (far right) attends the American Israel Public Affairs Committee annual national convention at the Walter Washington Convention Center in Washington, DC, on March 10, 2012. She is joined by fellow Democrats Paul Tonco, Joe Baca, and Debbie Wasserman Schultz. Lowey represented constituencies bordering and including arts of New York City. for 16 terms, from 1988 through 2021, rising to become Chairman of the powerful House Appropriations Committee. Prior to Congress she served for 13 years as Assistant Secretary of State of New York. She coveted the New York US Senate which opened up in 2000 but backed off when her friend Hillary Clinton decided to run winning a solid victory over her Republican challenger. She was known for her charm, determination, and brilliance. She graduated from arguably New York City's most prestigious public high school, the Bronx High School of Science and was valedictorian. She earned her B.A. at the highly competitive Mount Holyoke College. A staunch supporter of Israel and peace in the Middle East, Nita Lowey died on March 15, 2025, after a battle with breast cancer. She was surrounded by family at her home in Harrison, New York.
