Description
Portugal, Madeira Island, village Ribeira Tabua, municipality Ribeira Brava. A tourist attraction of the Madeira is a Levada walk. Walking along a Levada, an irrigation canal. Most Levadas were built centuries ago by slaves. Today, a Levada is for irrigation of farmland, a footpath for local peasants and the tourism industry. The walker, hiker, local farmer has sometimes to walk on a narrow strip of concrete, with on one side a rock wall and on the other side, wild vegetation and deep gorge or valley. This man is followed by his dog, pet, and he carries a bag with just harvested vegetables on his shoulder.
