Assisi is best known as the birthplace of St. Francis of Assisi ââ¬â patron saint of Italy, founder of the Franciscan order, and one of the most popular Catholic saints in history. Assisis main attraction is the 13th-century Basilica di San Francesco (left), which contains the sacred relics of Francis and beautiful frescoes of his life. In the center the dome of the Chiesa Nuova, built in 1615 on the site of the presumed birthplace of St. Francis, the house of Pietro di Bernardone.
