Description
One of General Ulysses S. Grant's early attempts to neutralize the Confederate fortress city of Vicksburg was to build a canal across DeSoto Point and change the course of the Mississippi River. The plan failed. Today the NPS maintains the last remaining original segment of the canal. The Ninth Regiment of Connecticut Volunteers were instrumental in constructing the canal.
