Kavady is a Hindu atonement festival characterised by the piercing of tongues and bodies with long steel needles and hooks to prove obedience and dedication to the Lord Muruga, the Hindu deity of healing. It was carried to South Africa from India. This image is from the Tongaat Kavady festival in Durban area, 12-13 April 2014.
