Description
Fort Popham Portland Pippsburg Maine. This Granite fortification was built during the early 1800s. Its purpose was to serve as defense for coastal areas and protect the bay area. This fort was named after George Popham. It served the USA during the revolutionary and civil wars. It became obsolute during WW1 when it was replaced with another fort. The forts also protected the fox and dix islands located nearby. In addition, the forts housed guns, rifles, cannons and other artillery. Located in Sagadahoc County. Useful in study, research and other academic and educational purposes. Serves as an attraction for tourism, recreational and travel purposes.
