Male Village Weaver Bird - Eastern Cape, South Africa #40492930
Description
This male Village weaver bird in his breeding plumage had been building a nest and displaying at the nest while trying to attract a mate. Young male birds of this species end up building numerous nests, most of which are turned down by his chosen female, before one is finally accepted. The nest sites are a noisy place with a colony nesting at the same time, normally on tree branches that hang over water. The males tend to choose the very end of a thin branch to build the nest, as any large egg or nestling eating snake such as a boomslang, will be unable to reach the nest, without thee snakes weight causing it to fall off the branch.
