Hairy Flower Wasp on Thistle plant flower. #42589343
Description
A Hairy Flower Wasp (Scolia hirta) is a huge insect belonging to the wasp group which has a preference for flowers which appear cyan or blue to it's eyes like this flower of the Thistle plant (Cardus). It also hunts for the larvae of beetles digging them out and laying it's eggs into their bodies which allows the little wasps to feed till maturity. The sharp prickles which cover the thistle are a good protection against herbivorous animals but it doesn't stop the wasp from feeding on pollen and nectar.
