Description
The art of Guilt Lacquer or Lai Rod Nam, is a well-known from of decorative art. It appears on book cabinets that are used to hold Buddhist scriptures. The stories the decoration depicts usually concern religious topics such as the lives of Buddha, including exquisite additional details such as human figures, animals, tree, rocks, devas, kinnaras, and flamme-like vegetalmotifs. The art might have originated during the early Ayuddhaya period. Earliest extant evidence, however, comprises only book cabinets of the rate Ayuddhaya period. In addition, this decorative art is used for utensils for the royal household and monks'residence. Most Ratanakosin gilt lacquers are found on door panels in many ubosots and viharas.
