Description
The Sassi, Matera, Basilicata, southern Italy. The Sassi (Stones), a UNESCO World Heritage Site, are one of Italyââ¬â¢s oddest urban features. Now mainly abandoned, they are a troglodyte enclave occupying the lower regions of the city, with the houses indistinguishable at times from the rocks. Matera is European Capital of Culture 2019.
