Jane Byrne, Jimmy Carter And George Dunne In Chicago Editorial Image

Chicago Mayor Jane Byrne joins Jimmy Carter and Cook County Democratic Party bigwig, George Dunne at a rally for the president at Daley Plaza in the run-up for the presidential election in October, 1980. The following month, Republican standard bearer Ronald Reagan trounced incumbent Carter. In 1979 Byrne became the first and only female elected mayor of Chicago. The Democratic mayor served one term before being beaten in the Democratic primary by Harold Washington, Chicago's first black mayor, in 1983. Feisty and outspoken, Byrne died at 81 on November 14, 2014.
