Characteristic corner of the city with two arches in the foreground. Evora is the biggest city of the Alentejo region and home to the second-oldest university only to that of Coimbra, having been founded in 1559. It has walls and is dominated by a medieval cathedral that towers over the labyrinth of narrow streets of the old town. For the large presence of architectural styles most various is considered a museum city and UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986.
