Description
Elvas is a Portuguese municipality located in the district of Portalegre. It is a fortified town to defend the border with Spain which is only 11 km away on the road from Lisbon to Madrid. Today it is a thriving manufacturing center, commercial and agricultural center of a hilly area covered with orchards and olive groves in the region of Alentejo. Its historic center is closed by a series of fortifications that bear witness to the strategic role of the military had in the past. Photo of magnificent acqueduto Amoreira begun in 1498 and completed in 1622. It is located west of the city and consists of overlapping arches with massive cylindrical pillars.
