Interior of St. Wolfgang's Church #49440771
Description
Saint Wolfgang built the church at the shore of the Wolfgangsee in 976. According to legend he threw an axe down the mountain to find the site and even persuaded the Devil to help with the building by promising him the first living creature to ever enter the church. However Satan was disappointed as the first creature over the doorstep was a wolf. In 1481 it was furnished with the altarpiece seen here in the picture which is one of the largest and most impressive carved and painted altar shrines in all of European art.
