Alten Berg - medieval Westphalian sovereign house, a branch of the first dynasty of the counts of Berg. From the counts house Alten Berg originate the counts house Lamarque (von der mark), Altena-Isenburg and Limburg Stirum. Castle Altena was supposedly founded in 1108 by the sons of the count of Berg Adolf and Eberhard, who received this land from the Emperor Henry V for faithful service.
