Description
This famous Buddhist temple dates from the 8th and 9th centuries. It is one of the most important temples in Asia. was built in three tiers: a pyramidal base surrounded by consecutive terraces whose walls and balustrades are decorated with thousands of unique low reliefs, covering a total surface area of 2,500 m2. These show the different steps of the life of Lord Buddha towards Nirvana. The monument was totally covered by ashes of the Merapi Volcano and rediscovered and by the Dutch when they ruled Indonesia. It was fully restored with UNESCO's help in the 1970s.
