HISTORY OF TUNG tungââ¬â¢ (à ¸â¢Ã ¸¸à ¸â¡) means flag. Besides being a decorative item, it has a particular meaning and it is used for different purposes. In general, Lanna people use ââ¬Ëtungââ¬â¢ for three different kinds of purposes: for auspicious ceremonies, funerals and for decoration. When used for auspicious ceremonies, it is believed to help avert misfortune. Lanna myth says ââ¬Ëtungââ¬â¢ helped to bring dead people from hell back to life. Offering ââ¬Ëtungââ¬â¢ is considered to be of big virtue. Most ââ¬Ëtungââ¬â¢ in Lanna are made of fabrics, paper, wood, metal, brass and palm leaf. It can have various shapes, sizes, and contain various details. Nowadays, ââ¬Ëtungââ¬â¢ is still alive in the Lanna tradition and in Buddhist religious ceremonies. Local People still make ââ¬Ëtungââ¬â¢ and bring to temple during a special Buddhist festival day, like the Thai New Year (Song Kran).
